Dr. Bryan Rill (aka DJ Neptune) began DJing in Gainesville, FL in 1993 while working as a sound engineer and lighting program designer. Complemented by 20 years of industry experience as a DJ and music producer, Neptune is an authority on electronic music culture.
Elevating his knowledge of electronic music culture though Masters and PhD degrees, Bryan researched how digitally mediated environments can engender radical shifts in worldview. His articles, “Rave, Communitas, and Embodied Idealism” and “Identity Discourses on the Dancefloor” are now taught in university courses on musical cultures. Dr. Rill leads the Applied Design Psychology stream for the MSc in Multimedia Entertainment & Technology program at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research focuses on the practices and environment that shape experiences leading to personal transformation. At PolyU he teaches sound design, instructing students in theory and production for music, game, and multimedia applications.
