Gloria Justen is a violinist, composer and improviser who mixes traditional instruments and perennial musical concepts with modern, expanded sonic possibilities and digital audio techniques.
Trained at the Curtis Institute of Music as a violinist, she has performed and toured with The Philadelphia Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, the Philip Glass Ensemble and a Tan Dun project, as well as playing many chamber works by other contemporary composers. She has also contributed to numerous albums by popular artists. Her own compositions have been performed by chamber orchestras in Philadelphia and San Francisco, and she has released a CD called Four-Stringed Voice: music for solo violin. On the digital sound side, Gloria has created surround sound collages incorporating field recordings, found sound-making objects, and studio-recorded instruments. She has also done improvisation on electric violin with DJ mixes. Gloria is currently based in San Francisco.
