Young Guru Legendary mix engineer, DJ, and educator, Gimel “Young Guru” Keaton is the man behind the iconic sound of world-renowned artist, Jay Z. Over the course of the last twenty years Guru has become one of the most influential minds in audio engineering.
Initially known for his award-winning audio mixes on some of the most successful commercial releases in the history of modern music, Young Guru is also highly regarded for his unique ability to communicate complex technical terms, to not only students but creatives and business professionals alike. This strength has led to invitations to speak at multiple corporations, including Google’s HQ, the Intel-Cornell Cup Competition at NASA, AT&T, BitTorrent HQ, and TechWeek (Chicago). In addition, Young Guru has spoken at numerous universities such as MIT, Cornell University, Emory University, and the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University.In 2013, Young Guru accepted an invitation to serve as Artist in Residence at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. Fall 2015 serves as his third consecutive year as a part of the USC faculty, where he has recently helped design the new Music Production major. Guru is also involved with several National Science Foundation projects via a long-standing relationship with Georgia Tech, one of the top technical institutions in the world. According to Wall Street Journal, Young Guru is the most influential man in hip-hop. Through his initiatives in education and innovation, Young Guru has traveled around the world sharing the importance of “creative engineering” which recognizes the cross-disciplinary engineering nature in which most millennials approach the creative process. Guru remains one of the most sought after audio engineers in music today, as his most recent work includes Vince Staples’ debut, Summertime ’06 and Common’s Grammy-nominated album Nobody’s Smiling, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. In addition to his work behind the board and in the classroom, he has announced his highly anticipated, Era of the Engineer Vol. 1; a “how to” book for engineers, producers, and artists alike.
