With Luisa Pereira, Mason Bretan and Paul Weir. Moderated by Dennis DeSantis.
As musicians and listeners, we use machines as tools to help us realize our own creativity. But what happens when machines themselves assume the role of the creator? Do our tools suddenly become our creative rivals? Can a machine really make original music? And if no listener can tell the difference, do the questions even matter?
The visionaries on this panel have each explored what it means to teach machines to make original music. By “coding the rules” that determine how a variety of styles and genres are constructed, these artists have created machines that are more than just tools; they’re composers in their own right. In this panel, the participants will discuss both the technical practice behind their work and the philosophical implications of the results.
