Akala is a BAFTA and MOBO-award winning artist, social entrepreneur and co-founder of The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company.

With his signature rap-electro-punk fusion sound and fierce lyrical storytelling, Akala has released six albums to date. Taking inspiration from the likes of Saul Williams and Gil Scot-Heron, Akala developed a live show with renowned drummer and award-winning music producer Cassell The Beatmaker, and they toured with Jay-Z, Nas & Damian Marley, M.I.A., Siouxsie Sioux and Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, appearing at festivals like Glastonbury and SXSW, as well as British Council arts projects across Asia, Oceania and Africa.

Akala is more recently known for his lectures, seminars, journalism (Guardian, Huffington Post UK and The Independent), social commentary, TV appearances and script-writing. He has featured on numerous TV programmes, speaking on issues like politics, youth engagement, Britain’s African-Caribbean culture and arts infrastructures.
