A recent study by the University of Westminster discovered what has long been anecdotally acknowledged: Musicians are more prone to mental illness than the general public. Connections between musicianship and mental health can be talked about from many different perspectives, yet the topic is still under-discussed. At the same time, the myth of mental illness as a creative force remains potent and dangerous.
HelpMusiciansUK is an experienced organization, conducting research, deepening understanding, and supporting musicians who are affected. This panel opens a conversation between artists, who will share experiences, realizations and coping strategies. We’ll also discuss the effect of mental health issues on music-making, and how to recognize warning signs. By informing, inspiring and empowering, the session aims to provide personal insight and practical resources for helping yourself and others.
