Beat Picnic: making music with field recordings (Sunday)

Taking photos and videos of our surroundings and using the images creatively has become a ubiquitous practice. But sound remains a relatively untapped resource in this context, and we often confine ourselves to unnecessarily conventional or controlled environments.

In this special session, sound designer and producer Ally Mobbs leads the group on an expedition to downtown Hollywood, where we’ll enjoy a social lunch and take some field recordings. We’ll then head back to the studio to reflect, and meet later to work on producing a track using just the sounds recorded outside.

As well as connecting with fellow producers outside the studio, we’ll learn which kinds of sounds work well as source material for different applications. The workshop also explores how sounds are related to a sense of memory and place, and how, through field recording, you can add these uniquely personal elements to your music. Together we’ll discover that even a minimal setup can lead to interesting recordings, and that literally thinking outside the box can bring about new and creative ways of working.

No experience is necessary to participate in this session. Please bring your phone to record. Additional recording equipment of your own is optional. Please also bring a USB drive, and the equipment you’re comfortable producing with (laptop, headphones, etc.).
