Music Improv Sessions

Sound in Space: interpreting graphical scores #1

In this Music Improv Session, composer Lea Bertucci will lead a small group of music-makers through interpretations of graphic scores by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pauline Oliveros and Cornelius Cardew.

Unlike those written with traditional western notation, graphical scores aren’t instructions to play certain notes at certain times. They’re more like sets of rules that invite new forms of creative play and an expanded approach to making music with others. By interpreting these scores and experimenting with different combinations of electronic and traditional percussion instruments, Bertucci hopes to facilitate new perspectives on abstract sound and inspire fresh ways of playing and listening to music.
