Ex-Easter Island Head is a UK-based musical collective composing and performing music for solid-body electric guitar, percussion, and other instruments.
Primarily performing as a quartet, the group uses multiple electric guitars augmented through mechanical preparations and extended techniques to explore group interplay, repetition, and melodic invention through purposefully limited means.
Their music has been compared to that of Steve Reich, Glenn Branca, and Claude Debussy, and has been performed solo by individual members and in groups of up to 30 with a variety of instrumentation.
They’ve had residencies and tours in the UK, Europe, and Japan, and have collaborated with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Laura Cannell, Arnold Dreyblatt and Rhys Chatham among many others.
In an intimate Studio Session and Music Improv Session, Ex-Easter Island will introduce attendees to their ethos and processes of composition and performance. Rather than be content with playing their instruments in more conventional ways, they explore prepared instrumentation and compositions to create beautiful complexity through clever arrangement. They are truly off the grid and attendees will leave with a tactile sense of arrangement and a path toward using the tools they already have in unique and musical ways.
