Music Improv Sessions

Interpreting Graphic Scores with Uwalmassa

In this musical improvisation session, Indonesian trio Uwalmassa will lead participants in an exploration of graphic scores and non-standard instrumentation.

For the first 40 minutes, Uwalmassa will introduce their graphic scores to attendees, encouraging them to interpret the notation by playing a range of percussive instruments, everyday items found in the room and their own bodies.

In the second half of the session, attendees will trigger clips on Push and Uwalmassa will respond on their instruments, creating a musical dialog in the group. No existing knowledge of graphic notation is required.

Uwalmassa is an Indonesian trio blends a variety of traditional instruments with digital sound manipulation. They create modern dance music drawing influence from a broad cultural spectrum, designed to deconstruct both current production trends and assumptions made about Indonesian culture and heritage.
