Microtonality: Tuning Your Creative Process

Tuning is a fundamental element of music-making and an intrinsic part of our cultural and individual identities – yet the related practice of microtonality is often misrepresented, misunderstood or taken for granted.

In this performative presentation, Iraqi multi-instrumentalist musician, composer and researcher Khyam Allami shares his experiences with microtonality and music technology, and how they interact within the music-making process.

Bringing insight from his training in Middle Eastern music traditions, Khyam will present examples from his creative explorations and personal research to demystify tuning, and highlight its relevance and possibilities, particularly in the context of non-Western music.
